ELEMENTARY 2 (students in grades 4-6)
The Montessori Elementary Program at Suder Montessori School is broken up into two distinct age groupings: Elementary 1: 1st grade through 3rd grade and Elementary 2: 4th through 6th grade. The children within this 6-12 age group are starting to realize that the world is an enormous, interesting place. They utilize their foundation from Early Childhood and are primed to delve deeper into the study of continents, cultures, scientific concepts, and great literature. The carefully developed elementary curriculum guides the child through identifying, classifying, and researching all of the fascinating concepts in each chosen field of study. The areas of practical life, language, math, geometry, botany, zoology, geography, and history are all represented in the classroom, with materials that lead the child from concreteness to abstraction of the fundamental concepts in each area.
Lessons are typically presented to small groups of children, who are then free to follow up with independent work of their own as interest and personal responsibility dictate. The scope of lessons and work in the Elementary classroom is quite broad; materials and lessons include work in language, mathematics, history, the sciences, the arts, and much more. Student-directed explorations of resources outside the classroom, known as "going out" in Montessori, are also an integral element of the Elementary
