SOCIAL EMOTIONAL SUPPORTS

Suder is proud to have a Social-Emotional Support Team consisting of a Dean of Students & Community, a School Counselor, a School Social Worker, and a School Psychologist. This team is an integral part of the total elementary school program. Some of the benefits this team provides to the school staff, students and parents include:

 

  • Facilitating effective communication between staff, students and parents
  • Helping problem solve and interpret the function of student behaviors
  • Assisting parents to understand their child’s progress in school
  • Helping children develop and build positive feelings about themselves, work, family, and society
  • Supporting children to accept their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses
  • Evaluating students for Diverse Learner support services
  • Assisting students to recognize the causes and effects of their actions
  • Aiding students to become responsible for their own behaviors
  • Helping students make reasoned decisions and develop effective problem-solving skills
  • Supporting students to gain an understanding of the world of work

 

School Counselor

Elementary School Counselors Implement the Counseling Program by Providing:

  • Goal setting and decision-making

  • Education on understanding self and others

  • Peer relationships, coping strategies, and effective social skills

  • Communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution

  • Individual student planning

  • Education on the understanding of self, including strengths and weaknesses

  • Transition plans

  • Individual/family/school crisis intervention

  • Individual and small group counseling

  • Conflict resolution

  • Consultation/collaboration

Dean of Students & Community

The Dean of Students and Community is responsible for maintaining a positive, caring, orderly, and supportive student culture and learning environment. Critical to this responsibility is serving as an advocate for the student, parent/guardian, and faculty members, as well as implementing effective interventions as responses to student concerns. Also, the dean plays an important role in promoting trusting and mutually respectful relationships among students, staff, and families by developing and maintaining strong lines of communication and transparency of expectations across stakeholders. In fulfilling these key responsibilities along with the others described below, the dean plays a critical role in ensuring that students feel a sense of community at Suder.

School Social Worker

School social workers pick up where teachers leave off. They are perhaps the professionals best equipped to address the social and psychological issues that can block academic progress. Through counseling, crisis intervention, and prevention programs, they help young people overcome the difficulties in their lives, and as a result, give them a better chance at succeeding in school.

 

School Psychologist

School psychologists are uniquely qualified members of school teams that support students' ability to learn and teachers' ability to teach. They apply expertise in mental health, learning, and behavior, to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. School psychologists partner with families, teachers, school administrators, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments that strengthen connections between home, school, and the community.
